Essay / The process of personally designing a scene from Pygmalion by Bernard Shaw
My group and I decided to do our project on Pygmalion by Bernard Shaw. I chose to be a set designer. This article will discuss my scene design process for the act (scene) we are focusing on. My group decided to focus on Act 4 of Pygmalion because there were several other scene changes in the play and because this act is one of the main points of the play. I will also discuss what I found while researching Pygmalion. Now, can you guess what the first thing I did for this project was? Say no to plagiarism. (Joe, still in class, made sure this was the first step). When I finished reading the play, I then drew a very quick sketch of what came to mind when I read Act 4. Then I met with my group and we We decided that the main theme or backbone of the play was about the way people were. using each other. Eliza was using Higgins to advance in the world and Higgins and Pickering were using her to win a bet. It was also decided that another theme of the play was how we initially perceive people and how we continue to see them. Higgins considered Eliza a bridesmaid, so that's what she will always be to him. Pickering, on the other hand, considered her a lady, so she will always be a lady to him. With this in mind, I started doing some research to improve my design for Pygmalion. After I figured out what the spine of the piece was, I looked for elements that would help me connect the design to the spine. Pygmalion was written in 1913. This is also the same time period that the play takes place. It takes place in London, England. In 1913, London was a time of industrial revolution. There was also the women's suffrage movement, which author Bernard Shaw may have established and shown how women were treated at the time. The Industrial Revolution brought wealth and cars to much of England. This caused a class system between rich and poor, which Shaw may also have made a statement about. So I decided to incorporate high-end elements into my stage design. Additionally, in the play, when Higgins enters the room, he throws his coat onto the newsstand without caring, while Pickering hesitates when he does so. This may show that Higgins doesn't care when he uses Eliza, and Pickering cares at least a little. So my design will dress up the newsstand and provide more of a showcase to show how they use it for household chores, just like they did for Eliza. I then defined what the design or (what the piece specifically requires) Pygmalion required. I then researched chair design styles of the time, because in the play Higgins and Pickering are sitting in chairs and talking. Eliza is also sitting on a piano bench. There is also mention of a piece of coat. So, these items I absolutely needed. This was what the scene design demanded. I then drew a second best design based on these ideas. Then I gathered photos from the era of the items I needed to make a third and final design. I then transferred this design onto a model of what my scene will look like. This is how I designed the scene from act 4 of..
