The Effect of Dress Code in SchoolsDress code is put in place to prevent students from being bullied because of the way they look how they dress and how some people may treat them differently based on what they wear. There is plenty of evidence showing that students waste time in class because they are too concerned about their personal clothing. David Brunsma, a sociologist who wrote Uniforms in Public Schools: A Decade of Research and Debate in 2005, says, "Dress codes and school uniforms increase school safety by eliminating gang-related clothing and helping to recognition of non-students on campus. Other potential benefits cited include better student behavior, greater resistance to peer pressure, and a greater emphasis on academics. In the United States, about one in four public elementary schools and one in eight public middle and high schools have policies dictating what a student must wear to school. (Ellis) Schools work to keep negative advertisements such as drugs and alcohol off of students' clothing so that others are not pressured into doing something without even realizing it. The purpose of this article is to discuss the positive impact of dress codes in schools. One of the effects of a school dress code is to prevent children from being bullied or treated differently because of what they wear. Dress code rules protect children from being taunted by their peers. Holmes says: “It's been 43 years, but I still remember the teasing I received at the bus stop on my first day in first grade. They called me a “wee-no” and picked on me for my homemade plaid dress and rhinestone cat-eye glasses. (Billitteri). Establishing a strike dress code policy on what can and cannot be worn in class helps prevent bullying.
