    According to SparkNotes, "sinners suffer punishment to a degree that suits the severity of their sin, in a manner corresponding to the nature of that sin" ( SparkNotes). The physical construction of Hell resembles a gigantic funnel that leads to the very center of the Earth. According to Dante, this huge, gigantic hole in the Earth was created when God cast the devil out of heaven with such force that he created a giant hole in the Earth. The devil was thrown to the very center of the Earth and has remained there ever since. Throughout Dante's journey through Hell, the reader can continually see sinners being punished by this ironic punishment that symbolizes their sins on Earth, which allows the reader to directly connect the sinner's punishment to the sin committed. The Lustful, the second song of the second circle, are constantly blown by dark and stormy winds symbolizing their swirling desire with their licentious impulses constantly swirling them into hell. The Wrathful, circle five canto seven, are constantly tearing and mutilating themselves, symbolizing their anger and the pain they have caused others in life and which is now constantly inflicted on them in death. The sloths, circle five canto eight, exist under the slime of the Styx, symbolizing their laziness on Earth leading them to remain permanently inactive in Hell. Those who murder go around in circles
