  • Essay / Schizophrenia: The Impact on Families - 1775

Families with a member suffering from any illness can be stressful enough, but families with members diagnosed with schizophrenia often face challenges additional factors such as “external stressors such as social stigma, isolation, and emotional frustration.” Often, family conflicts arise when members attempt to provide daily care (Chien, 2010, p. xi). “A Beautiful Mind” is a brilliant film directed by Ron Howard that chronicles the life of one John Nash, an eminent mathematician and the challenges he endures throughout his adult life with chronic mental illness . “A Beautiful Mind” helps us better understand the stressors many families experience when living with someone with schizophrenia. This article will explore the impact of schizophrenia on the lives of the Nash family, as depicted in the aforementioned film. Exploring the impact of illness on the lives of the Nash family will be followed by a discussion regarding an assessment conducted on the family, through the use of the Calgary Family Assessment Model. Carrying out the evaluation allowed us to determine two nursing priorities and the related nursing interventions using the Calgary intervention model. It becomes essentially clear that the challenges facing the Nash family are in the functional realm. The inability of families to communicate effectively and resolve problems becomes evident, negatively impacting the ability of families to function effectively. Our nursing interventions guided by the Calgary Nursing Intervention Model will focus on providing the Nash family with the support needed to make changes in the emotional domain to promote effective communication with the family...... middle of paper..... .y's ability to communicate effectively, solve problems, and successfully complete activities of daily living as a family.ReferencesAddington, J., Piskulic, D. and Marshall, C.
