  • Essay / Essay on Computers and Children - 1396

Statistics show that the use of computers is increasing in almost every aspect of life, which makes computers one of the most preferred elements not only in daily life of adults but also in that of children. Computers are the most sophisticated artificial thinking tools ever designed, and computer technology plays an important role in our daily lives. Children are exposed to it frequently, even daily, but this raises questions about the positive impacts it has on them. The importance of children using computers more frequently is always discussed. This is largely because computers are used as an essential tool to supplement children's education and make their learning process easier and more fun. However, as childhood is an integral phase that has shaped the development of younger generations, some believe that overuse can affect their development. The use of computer technology during this phase reshapes the physical and mental state of children in different and profound ways. Critics have claimed that technology in schools, particularly computers, wastes time, money and childhood itself by speeding up the pace and reducing essential learning experiences. (Cordes & Miller, 2000; Healy, 1998) Additionally, children may often become interested in addictive games readily available on the Internet, causing them to lose interest in studying. This is why children, especially those in kindergarten, should not be exposed to computer technology until late in the educational process because computers often distract young learners from learning the basics , or have them done for them by computers. Personally, I believe that the negative impacts due to daily computer use far outweigh its benefits. First of all, how...... middle of paper ......e understand and discover the world around them. For example, at school, subjects that were once considered boring and lost children's attention become refreshing, interactive and attractive again. In summary, there is a very clear line between the pros and cons of children. in computer technology. Even though young adults will become increasingly “technologically sophisticated” (Becker 69), the negative effects will still seriously harm children if left unguided. Computer technology is just a tool; it actually depends on other factors. How it is used depends on how it can cause harm or improve children's lives. Thus, society, parents and authorities must contribute to minimizing the negative effects and fully exploiting the positive effects of the use of computer technology in the lives of children..
