  • Essay / Miracles are possible - 1093

The decision was made in early August. It was time to start packing up and say goodbye to our oversized family. I had just turned 6 and didn't really know what this trip meant. What I knew was that this trip would change our lives forever, especially my parents'. My father was a politician in Colombia; we had a very good and easy life thanks to his status. My mother didn't have a real job; she was a mother of two at the time and expecting my second brother, so she spent most of her time painting. My older brother Julian was 5 years older than me; he always seemed to take care of me when my mother wasn't around. My father called him my second father. One day while packing, my father told me about our trip and how different and amazing life would be from that point on. He showed me the plane ticket and it said “Boston, Massachusetts.” He told me how he lived there alone before I was born until he was about a year old. We talked about our future lives until we finished packing. Leaving our family must have been very difficult for my father. He had 14 brothers and sisters who were very attached to him; he was always the one who was trustworthy. It was for this reason that they believed that he had become the most successful and the only one to leave the country in the hope of a better life for all of us. I didn't know exactly what to say to everyone because I didn't know when I would come back. Maybe it would just be a vacation and we'll all be together very soon. One of the nights before the trip, my mother became very ill. She was about 2 months pregnant at the time of the trip, which started to look a little suspicious to me and my brother because there was a lot of talking between our parents...... middle of paper .... .. Tor held a baby no bigger than a small Barbie in the palm of his hands. His words were “this is your son”. It hit Dad like a thunderbolt passing through his body, he couldn't believe that a toy sized baby weighing no more than 2.5 pounds was his son. Steven was then placed in an incubator where he spent almost 6 months before visiting his new home. Mom also stayed in the hospital for a few weeks, but luckily she was perfectly fine. The doctors called it a miracle, they were almost certain that the operation would not go as planned. Although Steven had to overcome many difficult obstacles during his hospital stay, he grew into a normal, healthy child. It was possible that he would become mentally deficient or suffer some sort of disadvantage, but he overcame these possibilities and proved to everyone that miracles are possible..
