Self-Image Research PaperImagine a world where everyone is perfect. Now try to recreate how they got there. It is literally impossible to meet everyone's standards of perfection, especially society's, because everyone perceives it differently. Being perfect can consist of a great personality or a beautiful body. Due to the increasing use of technology, the media has projected a certain way of looking, eating, dressing and/or behaving. Many adolescents in today's world are affected by society's projection of self-image. They go to extreme measures just to look like these “perfect” people and as a result; In doing so, they harm themselves. There are many different ways teenagers try to create the image the media portrays. Many turn to eating disorders to lose or gain weight. This can be very dangerous, not only do adolescents harm their health, but they commit suicide because of other people's opinions. Plastic surgery is also gaining popularity among teenagers because it is a quick and easy way to achieve the image they want. When teenagers go through all this, some succeed in achieving their initial goal, but others end up failing and start suffering from depression which can ultimately lead to suicide. One of the eating disorders that many resort to is bulimia. Bulimia nervosa is the act of bingeing and purging to compensate for weight gain via laxatives or self-induced vomiting (www.nationaleatingdisorders.org). Since bulimia is usually done with self-induced vomiting, it comes with many negative effects. These can range from burst blood vessels in the eyes to ruptured esophagus/bowel and tooth decay. Bulimia affects about one to two percent of young adults today, and 80% of people who suffer from it are women. To coincide with binging...... middle of paper ......u, that you.
