  • Essay / Society's Perception of Beauty - 1147

Beauty is defined as a characteristic present in something or someone that gives pleasure to the mind. It's subjective for everyone, but everyone is influenced every moment by what they see, hear and feel. Although people appreciate beauty, things or people we don't like can be treated harshly. Everyone is burdened in one way or another with being perfect, but women are usually the ones who experience the most pressure. Men are expected to be the breadwinners; they are thought to be smart, strong and brave and women are just expected to “become someone’s wife” (Cisneros) and be pretty. Throughout the ages and even today, women are seen as objects rather than human beings as strong as men. Today, women feel the impact of commercial beauty and fashion industries that shape and rely on "the cult-like worship of physical attributes that the public considers beautiful" (Dawson). The perception of beauty, distorted in contemporary society by widespread media, pushes some individuals to take extreme measures to form an unrealistic self-image. However, people lose their identity by focusing too much on their outward appearance, rather than letting the inner beauty shine through. The media plays an important role in influencing the public's perception of beauty. What children and adolescents see on television is what they admire; what they hear is what they say; and what they see is what they want. Ironically, reality TV shows don't portray life realistically. Most reality TV shows like Jersey Shore and The Bachelor are too exaggerated in order to entertain the audience. The Bachelor host Chris Harrison admits, “I'll be the first person to tell you we're putting the show on. We try to throw people...... middle of paper ... a question about their body type while men had more specific ones (Carey). Beauty should be represented by ordinary, healthy people rather than unhealthy and unattainable people. images of the body. This will make unhealthy people strive to be healthier and make normal people feel good and confident in their appearance. A positive body image, “a clear and true perception of your shape” (NEDA) will be generally reinforced. People will feel more confident in their bodies and not want to be someone they are not. Women would have less pressure to fit a standard or achieve an ideal body image and we could all focus on the things that are more important in life. Society should value inner beauty, personality, more than outer appearance. Character should be what determines beauty or attractiveness. People with good hearts and good minds are truly beautiful.
