Many people in today's society might consider themselves happy, but it's actually the opposite. Almost every character in the book is either always on some sort of device or so absorbed in robotic society that they never take the time to think about things. This causes discontent for many, but not all, characters in the book. There are still a few who take the time to think and are not always on a device.
