  • Essay / Disability in My Left Foot - 1908

The film My Left Foot by Daniel Day Lewis is the true story of a man named Christy Brown. Christy Brown was an Irish woman born with cerebral palsy, able to use only her left foot; the only part of his body he was able to control. Christy was born into a poor family, sometimes without enough coal to heat the house. Young children in his neighborhood allowed him to participate in various activities; like street football. However, many adults portray him as an inferior individual. Dr. Eileen Cole comes to Christy's aid, helping her with various aspects; like his disability and the recognition of his talents. The film depicts various difficulties faced by Christy and her family, but the way they were handled was the most inspiring. Throughout his life, Christy discovered a love for painting, in which he eventually became an extraordinary writer and painter. Through this heartwarming film, audiences were able to see the different aspects of Christy's disability that affected many areas of life that most individuals take for granted. Cerebral palsy left him severely disabled, during which he was spasmodic, had difficulty speaking, and was nearly quadriplegic; but he was not completely quadriplegic, as he had a functioning left foot. For these reasons, many people, including his father, considered him retarded and a sinner. However, his mother was a constant support, always believing that he was more capable than most people gave him credit for. Regarding her functional limitations, Christy had difficulty moving independently, speaking, and writing/painting. However, even though at the time of giving up, Christy managed to inspire her family...... middle of paper ...... ty in her older years is the Ring-Pen writing instrument. One of the many benefits of the Ring-Pen is the ability to use the device as a pen on the toe, rather than between two fingers. For Christy, this device would have greatly aided her writing and painting, reducing the tremors and muscle pain involved throughout the process. With the Ring-Pen writing instrument, a solid grip would provide comfort and rest to the writing toe or finger. Another strong point of this device is its low stylus and warranty. This assistive technology costs around sixteen dollars and comes with a twelve month warranty. One of the downsides of the device is the money you have to spend on ink refills, which cost around nine dollars. This amount may not seem like much, but after using this writing instrument regularly, the money adds up.
