  • Essay / Supersize Me: The Revenge of the GMOs - 843

“Supersize Me” is a film written and directed by Morgan Spurlock, this documentary observes the effects of the fast food industry on American society. The principle of “Supersize me” is an attempt to eat only at McDonalds for a total of thirty days. This “McBinge” was inspired by a lawsuit involving two teenage girls who attempted to sue McDonalds for their obesity and health. McDonald's, the number one fast food industry at the time, could offer food almost everywhere one looked, the ability to supersize one's food order gave the satisfaction of examining the effects of fast food on the company. Spurlock decides to take on the challenge presented by a judge who ruled that unless it could be proven that McDonalds could in one month make a person physically ill, the case would have no merit. Hired to test and prove that the girls had a case, Mr. Spurlock began his fast, imbibing only the products sold by McDonald's. Spurlock offers many techniques to capture the audience's attention; he uses logos, pathos and ethos throughout his film. Spurlock consults with various doctors, keeping in touch with them by going in for weekly exams and following their instructions as closely as possible while ensuring that he does not endanger his study. In order to monitor and ensure his safety, Spurlock calls on three doctors - a general practitioner, a cardiologist and a gastroenterologist - who declare that his general health is excellent. Also enlisted are a registered dietitian and an exercise physician. The registered dietitian helps keep track of how much food and calories one should consume each day. While the exercise doctor ensures that Spurlock does no exercise, limiting him to less than...... middle of paper ......age. The moments in the film, where he exposed the harsh reality of his diet, made the film more relatable and made the experience real. The foods so often consumed by society are made and grown using chemicals and, even though we can't see it, it's killing us. The film revealed how McNuggets are chickens pumped up with hormones to have unusually large breasts. Then, horribly placed in an entire machine, where their heads are cut off and then the rest of their bodies, including feces, come out of the machine in the form of Chicken Mc Nuggets is a horrific revelation. Everyone is gradually digging a grave with fast food and ready-made products that we prepare at home. The bagged vegetables that are so useful for Sunday dinners and the ketchup we love to load on fries and burgers are all loaded with nitrates and corn syrup..
