  • Essay / The Taming of the Shrew - 2117

The Taming of the Shrew is perhaps one of Shakespeare's most problematic plays due to the conundrum it presents with the Induction in which a complete five-act play is framed in another room. The characters and story introduced in the induction, at first glance, appear to have little or nothing in common with the main play and after the induction the characters are only briefly introduced again. Critics disagree and give varying interpretations as to why Shakespeare included induction. It has been argued that the induction and character of Sly prepares the audience for the rest of the play by introducing the motifs of transformation, domestication, and the theme of how a person's environment can determine their behavior. Critics who agree with this argument like to draw parallels between Sly and Katherine, where Katherine's eventual "taming" into a true wife mirrors Sly's transformation into a lord. In both cases, Sly and Katherine end up taking on the roles expected of them, but they both benefit in one way or another from their changes. Most feminists hate this change in Katherine, and as a result there is much disagreement about the context of her monologue in the final scene of the play. Although Katherine continually establishes man as the ruler of woman in her speech, it can be interpreted to represent the concept of mutual support between women and men. Additionally, if Katherine and Sly are meant to truly mirror each other, it can be inferred that Katherine has not truly transformed at the end of the play, but rather is playing a role to be able to cope with the role she assumes in the room.
