Essay / Essay on The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
“Two personalities – opposite and antagonistic – intertwine in one body and, as such, the novel has rich potential for psychoanalytic criticism » (Ruwe). In the book The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the truth about human nature is exposed from the author's perspective. Stevenson reveals some things that people of the time, and perhaps even know, considered grotesque and not at all humane behavior. From time to time, there are people who recognize the dark truth behind true human nature, the good and the bad. In the story, they are not two different people but two different “personalities”. Jekyll is able to blur the lines between what is right and what is good. wrong, become Hyde and leave his conscience behind. "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is perhaps the purest example in English literature of the use of double convention to represent the duality of human nature." (May). The level of exposition that Stevenson shows in his novel is quite extensive as he chooses to describe and use words that normally wouldn't really blend together but manage to make sense when trying to explain human nature. “Dr. Jekyll represents the conventional, socially acceptable personality and Mr. Hyde, the uninhibited, criminal self, is the most obvious aspect of Stevenson's story. (Can). Charles May explains how Stevenson talks about Hyde but throughout the book gives no solution or what could be done to stop what is happening to Jekyll until the very end then he explains why this happened to Jekyll and May brings the Super Ego and how it affects the story and Jekyll himself was able to separate said super ego from his identity. Donelle Ruwe brings up human ambition, there are appropriate levels of it, which are healthy but too much was said in the middle of paper......ol and killed the guy. According to Ruwe, the novel has great psychoanalytic value, he explains that it contains two personalities that clash and are exactly opposites (Ruwe). Human nature is exposed from Stevenson's point of view. Back then, more things were considered grotesque and horrible about the actions of human beings, which still sometimes applies to human nature today. There is that person who from time to time recognizes the dark truth of human nature, good and evil are exposed, in truth there is a part of both sides in everyone but some choose not to recognize it, Dr. Jekyll blurs the lines. lines between good and evil leaving his conscience behind. According to May, the strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is the best example in English literature that uses double entender or dual personality to represent two sides of human nature (May).
