  • Essay / Portuguese immigration to Canada - 1203

The Portuguese immigrated to Canada around the 19th century. It all began in 1953, when a group of Portuguese pioneers immigrated to Canada (Moura, 2003). Once the first Portuguese pioneers crossed the ocean to immigrate to Canada, others followed and started a wave of sorts. However, in 1957, a volcano erupted, known as Capelinhos, which eventually prompted Portuguese families and pioneers to settle in North America (Morrison & James, 2009), because the conditions of life had changed. Many Portuguese immigrated to Canada to earn a better living, looking for work to survive and not serve the war. This article will discuss the Portuguese ethnic minority group in Canada and examine it in more detail. He will discuss the arrival of the Portuguese in Canada and the statistical characteristics of the Portuguese population in Canada. It will also mention how many Portuguese there are, where they settled when they arrived in Canada, the problems they encountered regarding prejudice and finally discuss whether or not they are present in the criminal justice system. The Portuguese arrived in Canada. for many reasons. The first reason is political factors such as the rise of fascism in Portugal. Second, for economic factors such as “relocation for work such as whaling and fishing, and later for work in agriculture, textiles and leather” (Morrison and James, 2009). The fascinating aspect of Portuguese families immigrating to Canada is that most husbands first immigrated to Canada before their wives. The reason they immigrated to Canada before their wives was to help their own family start a life in Canada. By the 1950s and the 1st...... middle of article... it was claimed that the number of students of Portuguese ethnic origin had increased markedly (Higgs, 1990). This leads us to conclude that although the Portuguese had difficulties when they arrived in Canada, things have definitely changed in recent days since they are living the life they imagined they would have once they left Portugal .
