    This practice is common almost everywhere, but Jackson provided the public with a view of what a hypocrite views to the healthy eye. From the beginning of the story, the townspeople seem to agree with the practice of the lottery. The character of Tessie Hutchinson is the greatest example of hypocrisy in history. During his presentation, his attitude demonstrated indifference towards the ritual. She arrived late, claiming she didn't remember what day it was and later joking with her husband about being late. His attitude gives the reader the impression that this terrible ritual was just a common occurrence that no one cares about. Later in the story, the reader discovers that his family “won.” At this point his attitude completely changes. She started to complain, saying, "You didn't give him time to get the paper he wanted. I saw you. It wasn't fair!" As this happens, other characters in the story who had humorlessly engaged her before the lottery, begin to act indifferent to Tessie's argument, saying, "Be a good sport, Tessie » and “We all took the same chance”. It's clear that everyone is very hypocritical about the friendship they seem to have towards Tessie's character. As the story progresses, readers discover that Tessie chose the piece of paper with the mark indicating that she was the one to be sacrificed. By now, Tessie's character had realized that over the years she had been participating, she was participating in a very immoral act. Before stoning her to death, she once again tries to convince her friends, neighbors and family members that the ritual being performed is wrong, shouting "It's not right, it's not right.
