Never Cry Wolf, by Farley Mowart, describes a scientist's adaptation to the wilderness as he is looking for wolves. Tyler, who is the main character, learns throughout the film to respect the rights of animals in nature. Before his adventure begins, Tyler meets a drunk at the bar who tells him to avoid the wild, as he would be the only meat to eat there. Rosie, a bush pilot, takes Tyler into the wilderness and has no feelings towards nature at first, but discovers there is a use for it later and becomes enriched by its resources and people. Ootek, an Indian who looks at wolves in a special and profound way, has a great influence on Tyler's development of respect for nature. At the start of his adventure, he quickly learned to respect nature and its inhabitants. Upon meeting Ootek, Tyler began to discover what nature was really like. Mike gave him the same impression as Ootek. When Rosie dropped Tyler off, he argued that he had no idea where they were or why they were there. He was extremely uncertain about its nature and composition and felt he did not need it. When Tyler went to explore the area near the end of the film, he found Rosie and a few other guys camping and playing soccer by a lake. When confronted, Rosie declared that he had hit the jackpot and planned to transform the acreage into something fabulous. Ultimately, Rosie had no respect for the wilderness or its people, but she was happy with it because it made him rich. The drunk at the bar clearly didn't care about nature at all, as he told Tyler that if he went out, he was sure to be killed and eaten by wild animals. When Tyler met Mike, he had found a friend. Mike was an English-speaking Indian who served as a translator between Tyler and Ootek and provided Tyler with someone to talk to. Mike respected nature as much as Ootek did at first, but towards the end he lost any respect he ever had. He wanted to leave and had nothing to do with it; able to leave nature behind and move forward without thinking twice. What we've seen in trying to compare and contrast these feelings toward nature and wilderness is that many people feel very different things; However, certain incidents and moments can change anything and everything. Tyler went from insecurity to having the greatest respect for wolves and their environment. Rosie went from feeling the pointlessness of it all to greatly appreciating him for making him extremely wealthy. Ootek and the Drunkard maintained their feelings towards nature throughout the film, even though they were complete opposites. Mike, on the other hand, has lost all the respect he had for nature, wolves and those who respected them. He ended up not caring about it at all, wishing he didn't have to deal with it. Each character had a different vision of nature as well as different uses. It's hard to decide what's right, but we're all capable of forming our own opinions...
