  • Essay / The Sins Of Greenwashing - 876

TerraChoice, a company dedicated to researching corporate greenwashing, is part of the Underwriters Lab Network which works to "advance global sustainability, environmental health and safety by supporting growth and development”. of environmentally friendly products, services and organizations” (The Sins of Greenwashing, About Us). In its investigations, TerraChoice determines greenwashing using its "six sins of greenwashing" as guidelines which are: the sin of hidden compromise, the sin of absence of evidence, the sin of absence of vagueness, the sin of irrelevance, the sin of lying and Sin of the lesser of two evils. These six sins can be used to assess the integrity of Better World Book's sustainability efforts. The sin of hidden compromise refers to companies that claim to be environmentally friendly, but are actually harmful in the process of their activities. One such example is paper companies that in their processes emit carbon emissions as well as the fact that the paper they initially use comes from the degradation of a forest (The Sins of Greenwashing, The Seven Sins) . In 2007, TerraChoice conducted research and found that approximately 57% of businesses suffered from the sin of hidden compromise, the most common of all (The Sins of Greenwashing, Greenwashing Report 2007). In this regard, Better World Books is committed to being as environmentally friendly as possible. Although it is a paper company and sells books, it does not actually harm the environment. All of their books are donated and have already been produced. They only resell books made by other companies. In fact, those that cannot be resold are then either recycled or used in certain paper shipments......, many customers find it difficult to adhere to their testimony of "end the book famine in Africa" as well as saving people from illiteracy" (Rosenthal). In line with this, the Better World Books website sends a message to consumers stating that "Better World Books has changed its terms to better explain its business model. There has sometimes been some confusion about the role Better World Books plays in acquiring books and creating a market for them (or donating them to worthy recipients, in line with our social mission). We are now trying to explain ourselves better” (Rejections and donations from libraries). Better World Books proves to be reliable and environmentally friendly, but they lack economic and social proof, which worries customers and joins the group of other companies that commit the sin of lack of proof..
