Essay / The Medical Field - 888
There are many different careers in the world. One of the most important career fields is medicine. The medical field includes many different jobs, including physical therapists, surgeons, pediatricians, nurses, and anesthesiologists. All of these jobs help people when they are sick, injured, or recovering. Being a surgeon is one of the most difficult jobs in medicine. Becoming a surgeon is a long journey filled with many hours of hard work, but if one finds saving lives rewarding, then it is the ideal profession. Neurosurgeons, cardiovascular surgeons, and general surgeons are just a few of the different types of surgeons practicing in the medical field. “Neurosurgery is the surgical specialty that deals with the nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord” (Heisler). Neurosurgeons help by performing some of the most complicated and stressful surgical procedures. “Cardiovascular surgery is surgery on the heart and chest, or both” (Heisler). Cardiovascular surgeons perform operations such as heart transplants, artery replacement, valve replacement, and bypass grafts, to name a few. The average cardiovascular surgeon performs approximately 150 CABG, the term for bypass surgery, per year (Eisenhower; Cohn). “General surgery is the surgical specialty that primarily focuses on the abdominal organs” (Heisler). Even though they are called general surgeons, these men and women are very competent. They usually work on appendicitis, hernias, gallbladder surgeries, stomach and intestinal problems (Heisler). All of these types of surgeons work in sterile, well-equipped, lit, and ventilated operating rooms (“doctors and surgeons”). Most surgeons work in hospitals. They can work in a hospital or they can ... middle of paper ... rewarding, so being a surgeon can be the perfect occupation. With the many types of surgeons, a person can choose from many options. In addition to the good salary he can earn, a surgeon has the opportunity to work varied hours and in varied locations. Although the journey to becoming a surgeon is filled with many stages of training and long hours of hard work, being a surgeon is a rewarding profession for those who put in the work it takes to become a surgeon.
