Psychological Perspectives AssignmentThe word psychology comes from the Greek word “psyche” which means mind, body and spirit. The first known ideas in psychology also come from ancient Greece. Thales of Miletus (624-546 BC) states that the brain plays a vital role. This has not always been said, because it was long thought that the brain was a large snot gland. Pluto (427-347 BC) is said to have debated and believed that we are all born knowing everything we know, all our behaviors, and all the knowledge we possess when we are born. Unlike Aristotle (384-322 BC) who believed that we are all born with a "blank slate", which is the Greek saying meaning "blank slate", and that all our knowledge and behaviors are learned through our experiences and the environment around us. Aristotle also produced the first psychology textbook in 350 BC (De anima). This theory was still believed in the 1600s, John Locke (1632-1704) also believed in the “tabula rasa” theory. In the Middle Ages (400-1500 AD), intellectual life was dominated primarily by Christian theologians who believed that the explanation of everything in life and mind was either an act of God or an act of the devil. The first psychology laboratory was opened at the University. of Leipeg, Germany by William Wundt in 1879. Wundt and his colleague attempted to conduct investigations through introspection. Introspection involves analyzing a person's conscious thoughts and feelings. It’s also how we all think about a situation. This was carried out under controlled conditions but had very little ecological validity. They tested theories dating back thousands of years.…Wundt believed that conscious mental states could be studied scientifically through the systematic manipulation of antecedent variables and carefully analyzed...... middle of the 'article...... between the id, the superego and the environment, we develop this around the age of 2-3 years and thirdly, our SUPER EGO where the decision made by the EGO comes out and is in contact with reality, values and morals. We develop this around age 5. Our personality being structured in this way, we are on the verge of restricting certain thoughts. Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) had the first psychodynamic theory. Although all of Freud's work is based on only 6 case studies, his work was very diverse, including the association between dreams, sleep and the real world. Freud believed that we obtain pleasures from certain parts of our body at five fixed stages of our development. These are the oral, anal, phallic, latent and genital stages.BibliographyWorks citedGROSS, RICHARD (2009), Psychology, the science of mind and behavior. 5th edition. London: Hodder Arnold.
