Essay / The Importance of Homework - 2385
Teachers may provide homework to their students for a multitude of reasons, they may believe it contributes to academic success or it may be used as a method of choice for teachers to students practice or refine the skills they have learned in the classroom (Becker & Epstein, 1982, cited in Cooper, Robinson & Patall, 2006; Ilgar & Ilgar, 2012). This may involve introducing new materials to acquire basic knowledge (Muhlenbruck, Cooper, Nye & Lindsay, 1999, cited in Cooper et al, 2006), completing work that has not been done in class , or it may also simply be provided to live up to the expectations of the school and the wider community (Coutts, 2004). Guskey (2007), cited in Hong, Wan, and Peng (2011), found that some teachers view the quality of homework and the methods students use to complete it as demonstrating a clearer understanding of students' knowledge and understanding than the standardized assessments they perform. Homework has been a topic of discussion and research for over 70 years, with the first recorded research into its benefits being carried out by Hagan in 1927. At first, they were very beneficial, as they not only helped advance the knowledge of students, but also helped create disciplined minds, then opinions changed, seeing homework as an obstacle to family activities and family life which were of greater importance. In the 1950s opinion changed again as school life was thought to be lacking and homework was necessary to reinforce work done in class and subsequent homework was seen as detrimental to the student's mental health ( Marzano and Pickering, 2007). As teachers of 21st century students, it is important that there is a current and relevant view of homework and this is an advantage...... middle of paper...... I don't see the benefits of homework and it may not help eliminate distractions to help students focus their concentration. Taken together, the research indicates that homework is beneficial for elementary school students in that it allows them to learn the skills and attitudes toward homework that will be useful to them later in their school lives. , but only marginally in terms of academic success, provided that they come from a high socio-economic background and their parents have education that will help them eliminate distractions and give meaning to the work that has given them been entrusted. For homework to be as beneficial as possible for students, teachers must communicate the value of work and must be adapted to family life. It must be engaging and interesting so that students want to complete it, but provide sufficient balance between work and leisure..
