Essay / Analysis of Art Spiegelman's graphic novel 'The...
In life we represent mice as dirty creatures who take food and other objects from us; they are pests. Likewise, cats are often called upon to rid the house of these parasites. They will either eat these mice or chase them out of the house. During the Holocaust, in Spiegelman's novel, the Nazis do just that. In the first part of his graphic novel, My Father Bleeds History, he shows these same Germans beginning to eliminate the Jewish people, one group at a time, starting with the elderly. On page 88, Vladek and his family received a notice from the Germans which stated: "All Jews over the age of 70 will be transferred to Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia on May 10, 1942." This was the first step taken by the Nazis to eradicate the Jews. After the expulsion of the elderly, the Nazis began eliminating Jews who could and could not work. Jews who could work were given stamps and sent home, those who could not work or seemed weak were sent away "And those on the wrong side never came home again" (Spiegelman 93). Every day fewer Jews remained due to the elimination of the Nazis.
