Essay / forgets everything else in his life and focuses only on his feelings for Daisy. “She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me. It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart, she never loved anyone but me. (Fitzgerald 137) This quote shows how selfish Gatsby is because he tries to persuade Tom that his wife never loved him, so that he can finally fulfill his dream of being with Daisy like they were formerly as a teenager. Gatsby doesn't seem to care that she is intruding into Tom and Daisy's lives knowing that they have been married for years and even have a child together. In this novel, Gatsby is sort of trying to brag about where he got his money to Daisy. Despite what he tells her about the origin of his wealth, his money actually comes from smuggling. “I didn’t want you to think I was nobody.” (Fitzgerald 71) Gatsby lies about some of the things he said to Nick while explaining the story of his life growing up and how he got to where he was. This makes Gatsby selfish because he does not give Dan Cody credit for what he did to change his life from poverty to his current life in wealth. Dan Cody played an extremely important role in his life and it was he who brought him to his wealthy lifestyle, not just Gatsby himself and his "drugstores". Gatsby's goal was to impress Daisy, so he did not recognize the truth or recognize the one who should have gotten it. The motif of carelessness is depicted in this novel to show how the upper class people did not realize the effect that could have happened when the result of their careless actions. The people of that time, especially the characters in this book, were selfish and very insensitive to people's feelings. This book won awards because of the importance of the story. Although it was written in the context of the 1920s, it is still very relevant to that period and will continue to be. Although it primarily affects the upper class or wealthier people, carefreeness remains important to American society in many ways. For example, on the topic of selfishness, some celebrities born into a “rich life” seem to not know the value of money and decide to be selfish with their money. On the other hand, famous people who have built careers and success themselves often use their platforms to give back and meet the needs of others. In today's relationships, simply being considerate and understanding of a partner's feelings can have a big effect overall. Keep in mind: this is just a sample.
