Essay / Genetic factors and criminal behavior - 701
In this article, the two authors study the link between genetic factors and criminal behavior. They examine the causes that lead someone to act criminally. Several factors are considered in relation to the cause, such as social factors and environmental variables. Social factors are the more studied of the two. They hypothesized that other performance factors or alone with environmental variables would provide insight into why some people become criminal. The genetic factor of influence due to mental disorders would have a slight role in the criminal behavior of people. Another cause examined was the combination of genetic and environmental factors, with the possible result of a higher risk of criminal behavior. They also explore myths about the link between genetic factors and criminal behavior. The first myth they examined was "Identifying the role of genetics in criminal behavior implies that there is a 'crime gene.' This myth has been dismissed due to the improbability of a single gene being responsible for criminal behavior. The second myth they examine is “the attribution of crime to genetic factors is deterministic.” This myth is also easily dismissed because just because a person has a predisposition to a certain behavior does not mean they will perform that behavior. They also review genetic epidemiological studies. These three studies deal with twins in relation to...
