    “The Frost of the Ancient Mariner” In The Frost of the Ancient Mariner by Coleridge, it is the story of a sailor who suffers the brutality of God because of his carelessness towards nature. Coleridge uses many Gothic elements: supernatural events, dreams/visions, and overwrought emotions, all of which are prominent in the poem. Many supernatural events occur throughout the poem. Coleridge mentions, “It was she, the nightmare of LIFE IN DEATH, / That thickens man's blood with cold” (lines 194-195). This quote means that the crew encounters the ghost ship with death and nightmarish life on board, on which the two compete by taking fate and chance (which is an unbelief for Christians) into rolling dice to the crew. As a result, the Mariner was won by Life in Death and Death won the crew who are stripped of their souls as the Mariner watched in horror for precisely seven days and seven nights. These events seem strangely haunting and mystical, which is further attributed to elements of Gothic literature. Supernatural events don't stop, especially when monstrous events...
