The famous German scientist Albert Einstein once said: “it has become painfully obvious that our technology has surpassed our humanity” (“Albert Einstein”). As "The Veldt" shows, Ray Bradbury's thoughts on technology resemble those of Einstein. Bradbury was born August 22, 1920, in Waukegan, Illinois, and died June 5, 2012. Around the time "The Veldt" was written, many American families purchased televisions, which inspired this history. Concerned about the growing popularity of television and its possible negative effects at the time, Bradbury wrote "The Veldt." In this short story, two children become attached to their high-tech nursery and appreciate it more than their own parents. In the review titled "Preview: 'The Veldt'", it is mentioned that "this fear [of television] is directly reflected in 'The Veldt,' but in the story, Bradbury increases the odds by creating a machine that does not only allows children to detach themselves. emotionally from their parents, but which can also destroy the parents physically” (“Overview”). The family in the story lives in a high-tech house with a nursery that can transform into any setting the two children imagine. George and Lydia think the kids created a scene they shouldn't have, the African Veldt, causing the parents to shut it down. The children become furious with their parents and end up killing them with lions in the manger. Ray Bradbury expands on his theme that excessive technology corrupts children in his short story "The Veldt" using setting, characterization, and foreshadowing.
