Essay / Stopping the Creation of Nuclear Weapons
As Thomas Jefferson once said, "the concern for human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only objective of good government.” Have political leaders set aside this advice in their quest for nuclear weapons proliferation? Since 1945, many world leaders have implemented forms of defense known as nuclear weapons, with the technology and capability to completely annihilate designated regions of Earth. Initially a defense plan, the creation of nuclear weapons evolved primarily into a show of force and military superiority with little regard for the preservation of innocent lives, as seen in Japan during World War II. . Although international legislation has been introduced to restrict nuclear weapons proliferation, the success of this legislation depends on transparency and the willingness of governments to verify their claims of non-proliferation; a transparency that does not exist. This political measure aimed at ending the proliferation of nuclear weapons is accompanied by military intervention, trade embargoes and sanctions. Although these measures have not yet brought a lasting and highly effective end to the proliferation of nuclear weapons, resistance to this practice is not in vain and is a step in the right direction. For moral reasons and the preservation of innocent human lives, governments around the world should continue their progress in ending the development of nuclear weapons through legislation, international peace talks, and various other peaceful methods. The history of nuclear weapons dates back 70 years. and continues to be an essential military factor today.
