Since the main setting takes place in Rick's nightclub, there is a constant sound of music playing in the background. One of the most memorable parts of Casablanca is the original song "As Time Goes By." As the song is played repeatedly throughout the film, it is evident that the meaning of the track changes over time. In the Paris flashbacks, when the song plays, it represents the love between Isla and Rick. After Isla left Rick, he refused to listen to the song, as it turned into a song that represented her, their relationship, and memories he didn't want to think about. When Isla and Rick are reunited, they both ask Sam to play the song, thus giving new meaning to the song; a possible new start for their relationship. Even if Rick and Isla don't end up together, "As Time Goes By" remains an important factor in their relationship. Moving on, the French national anthem, “La Marseillaise,” is another important musical piece in the film. At one point in the film, while at Rick's cafe, a group of Nazis started singing the Nazi anthem, which greatly upset Victor Laszlo.
