Sonny says, "I'm glad mom and dad are dead and can't see what happened to their son and I swear if I had known what I was doing, I would do it. never hurt you and many other great people who were kind to me and believed in me so much” (Baldwin 417). This expresses his inner disappointment while addressing the hurt and disappointment he has caused others. It's the least sweet part of family life and, in this case, the part no one wants to go through. Later, the narrator states: "He came to the house from time to time, but we argued almost every time we met... But there were a lot of other people in the room and Sonny would just lie on his bed, and he didn't come down. with me, and he treated these other people as if they were his family and not me” (Baldwin 427). This depicts a potential disconnect between Sonny and his brother. Treating your friends like family and your brother like a stranger demonstrates great suffering and a serious lack of brotherly affection between the two. Sonny later said: "And I don't know how I played, looking back on it now, but I know I did horrible things, in those days, sometimes, to people. Or it wasn’t that I did anything to them, it was that they weren’t real” (Baldwin 431).
