Essay / The Road Less Traveled - 1222
The Road Less Traveled; A new psychology of love, traditional values and spiritual growth. The Road Less Traveled, written by Mr. Scott Peck MD, is the book I chose from the list given to the class. The book explains how people react to different situations we encounter throughout our lives, from the lessons of childhood, and how we are raised based on our reactions to the situations we face as adults. The book is divided into four main parts; discipline, love, growth, religion and grace. And in each of these sections, Peck breaks them down further. Mr. Scott Peck is a best-selling author and psychiatrist. He was educated at Harvard and Case Western Reserve. Dr. Peck lives in northwest Connecticut, where he is in private practice. The Road Less Traveled is an amazing book about self-awareness that helps people deal with difficult issues in life, by allowing them to easily relate to some of the issues discussed in the book. The first topic he wrote about was discipline. When he breaks it down into different sections like: pain, responsibility, character disorders, healthy depression, and delay of gratification, he sums up this chapter when he says: “Life is difficult. »(15) Discipline is what we need to solve all of life's problems. Peck explains how we avoid pain and any emotional suffering is one of the leading causes of mental illness. People go to great lengths to avoid the emotional suffering that causes them to stagnate in their spiritual growth. When writing about Delaying Gratification, he uses a patient's cake eating habits to make his point. We learn from a young age to complete tasks and then reward ourselves. When we do the most enjoyable parts first, we tend to procrastinate on the rest, or even not finish it. Responsibility is a... middle of paper ...... each of them must help their patients. Each patient experiences a different problem and uses his knowledge and experiments with each patient and different schools of psychology of thought, He can help his patient to recover and lead a normal and healthy life. I would recommend this book to anyone, it has sections that almost everyone can relate to. When people see the problem they are facing in print, it helps them understand that they are not unique or alone in the difficult life. If they read that because of therapy, the person they identify with is now living a healthy and happy life, it gives them hope that their problems can be faced and they can live a normal life.
