  • Essay / Shawshank Redemption Reflection - 630

While sitting at home one rainy day, I watched the movie The Shawshank Redemption which starred Tim Robbins as Andy and Morgan Freeman as Red. The film is about a banker named Andy Dufresney who is sent to prison for the murder of his wife and her lover, which he claims he did not commit. In prison, Andy befriended a black prisoner named Red. One day, while in the laundry room, Andy overheard one of the guards (Guard Hadley) talking about taxes on an inheritance he is about to receive. Andy told Guard Hadley how he could avoid paying so much tax. After helping guard Hadley save a lot of money, it didn't take long for word to spread about how good Andy was when it came to finances. Soon, other guards from Shawshank and other prisons came to Andy for financial advice. Once Director Norton learned of this, he forced Andy to launder money under the alias Randall Stephens. After nearly 20 years in prison, a prisoner named Tommy Williams is locked up for burglary. He becomes friends with Andy and Red. After learning some details of Andy's case, Tommy explains to Andy that one of the inmates at another prison admitted to committing a similar murder, stating that Andy must be innocent. Andy tried to talk to Director Norton about the information he had just learned, but the Director refused to listen. Director Norton has Guard Hadley murder Tommy, claiming he was trying to escape and put Andy in solitary confinement. While on his own, Andy dreamed of living in a Mexican city. He shares this dream with his friend Red, but Red ignores it because he thinks Andy is suffering from delusions. Andy tells Red, if he ever gets free, to go visit a specific location near Buxton to look for a special package. One day at roll call, the guards found Andy's cell...... middle of paper...... He Prisoner Tommy was even shot in order to protect his financial and personal interests. Head guard Hadley abuses his power by intimidating, beating and killing some prisoners. I think the writer used a utilitarian approach in this film because some decisions are based on consequences and the end justifies the means. Having Andy launder money, but when Andy escapes, he takes the money and returns evidence to convict Norton of money laundering. Guard Hadley was abusing his power by intimidating prisoners into doing good, but Red was smuggling items inside the prison right under his nose to trade with the other prisoners. Yes, I believe the author gave a satisfactory resolution to the moral issues because I think most people may view these things as unethical, but most people will see it as justice done to the director and the guardian..
