They must be physically and emotionally strong and have a positive attitude in order to maintain a positive work environment. They must be accountable, to themselves and others, as they have a responsibility to ensure that safety is maintained in the workplace and that quality health care services are provided to patients. These attributes also help promote health and achieve individual and others’ goals and outcomes (Sivamalai, 2008). Question 2 Critical thinking and reflection constitutes self-assessment, recognizing the importance of research in practice and professional development. Reflecting on the practice of nursing or midwifery and recognizing the feelings, beliefs and outcomes of others is beneficial to the profession. Critical thinking has been used in nursing and midwifery practice for many years. Thought is vital for reflection. Being able to think systematically and rationally results in a feeling of reflective awareness. Critical thinking improves the safety of practice and the skills of nurses and midwives. This allows them to make safe and effective decisions about their work. It involves scientific reasoning, use of the nursing process, decision making, and reasoning about problems. This allows nurses to make rational decisions about the most effective ways to achieve their goals. Reflection in nursing and midwifery facilitates technical control and improvement of procedural approaches to their work.
