  • Essay / Food assimilation test - 1792

This is not a new trend. Often, immigrants take old recipes from their home country and prepare them with what they can find in America. The abundance of resources allows them to create foods that are similar in taste, but not in calories or fat content. Another aspect of this Americanization is the style of cooking. Many Haitian immigrants do not trim the fat or remove the skin from chicken before giving it to their family. However, in Haiti, dismissal is a common practice. This would make the food oilier and less healthy than if it were cooked in Haiti. In Haiti, frying food was a practice done sparingly, but it is a common American practice. Even if it is the immigrants themselves who modify their diet, these choices are not made consciously. Assimilation is something that, when done indirectly, seeps into the mind and changes people.
