Is music equal to life? Have you ever wondered what this quote could actually mean? Well, music in society can play a major role in our personality. Music, I believe, is the very essence of your definition of yourself, other than our family and peers. This contributes not only to our emotional and psychological development, but also to our involvement in society. The way we walk, talk and dress can also be a determining factor musically. Our involvement is entirely based on these assumptions about how we perform and behave based on the music we prefer. One of the most significant and astonishing results of music in society is in the means of communication. The most important thing to remember about music is that, regardless of language, we can communicate using many symbols. These symbols may include: rhythm, sound, instruments, etc. The sociologist can view music in several ways to see the behavior or effect it might have in society. These range from numerous theories and preferences (genres) to determining how people might react/interact with each other. Although music plays a large part of our individual lives, it also contributes to society as a whole. Society has a set of norms and rules that every individual must participate in, and those who do not choose to do so will be labeled. Many genres of music are also labeled because of the behaviors they contribute to. For example, rock and roll. This genre of music is considered dark, with heavy and loud music/sounds. Not only that, but the modes involved. For the purposes of this research, I will focus on the highly controversial and slightly new genre, Reggeaton.
