  • Essay / The relationship between national identity and...

Drawing inspiration from the book Nations and Nationalism, I understand the concept of nation and state as two different islands, formed independently, without the support of the other and without bridge. what connects them is nationalism (Gellner 1983). People who consider themselves part of a nation are a more homogeneous group in terms of religion, culture, language, etc., and tend to be psychologically linked in relation to the state which has a geographical border and a heterogeneous mix of people from diverse groups. However, the aim of this essay is not to define these concepts, but to understand whether there is a relationship between people identifying themselves as belonging to a particular nation and whether this identification leads to the development of that nation. For the purposes of this essay, I would like to consider state building in terms of the socio-economic development of the state in question, rather than a simple political process of establishing the state with a defined territory. I would like to examine, from my understanding of Indian history and my current experiences, how such a relationship between people identifying with India and the progress of the state in two different periods, one during the era of freedom struggle and post-independence. period and the situation that exists in contemporary times. Culture plays a predominant role in the germination of national identity among people, as Fanon (1963) in his book The Wretched of the Earth describes that colonizers tend to impose their culture on the people they have colonized and this exasperates people (ibid), the British in India forced Indian soldiers to use cartridges greased with cow and pig fat.
