  • Essay / Challenges Facing Muslims in Sweden - 1396

Political ChallengesMuslims, as individuals and communities, have also faced challenges in terms of politics. This can be proven when there are no official figures showing how many Muslims live in Sweden. In fact, the authorities refuse to publish statistics on religion and culture. For this reason, it is difficult for researchers and analysts to know the number of Muslims born, population composition, living conditions and much more. Until 2013, the country welcomes immigrants to Sweden and the immigration policies are more open than other countries like Denmark, Canada and other countries. However, in February of the same year, the Minister of Immigration considered limiting the number of immigrants. Indeed, the Muslim population in Sweden has doubled over the past 14 years. Another challenge faced concerns the law prohibiting Muslim women and students from wearing headscarves in public schools and public places. For students, it also affects the law in schools around 2004 and it was extended in April 2011. In November 2013, Muslim women even filed a complaint against the ban before the European Court of Human Rights. There is also controversy regarding political issues. One of them concerns the demand for special legislation for Muslims in Sweden. The legislation includes Islamic holidays, public funding for the construction of mosques, the power of the imam to approve all divorces between Muslim couples, and permission for imams to teach Islam in public schools. However, this request was rejected by all political parties and the government. At the moment, another controversy concerns the issue of a Malay Muslim couple in Sweden who were arrested for hitting...... middle of paper ...... hat they had done it.
