Essay / Gender Roles of Butterflies - 1706
The book “In the Time of Butterflies” by Julia Alvarez teaches us the role of a woman in the 1940s to 1960s in the Dominican Republic. Society sets gender roles for everyone, even children. The role of a woman in India is difficult, she has to take care of the household and the illiteracy rate among women is high. Women are supposed to be married, otherwise people will give them bad looks. Women are not supposed to divorce, they have to put up with whatever their husband does to them, even if it means having children outside of marriage. Some teenage girls have to sacrifice themselves after becoming pregnant and dropping out of school in order to feed their babies. Society needs to know that women deserve the same equality and treatment as men, that it is a myth that women are less strong and less intelligent than men, that society has not changed enough for women are treated equally.
