  • Essay / The Need for School Uniforms - 444

In today's society, school-age children are under enormous pressure to fit in with their peers while performing well academically. I believe that K-12 school uniforms are a great way to help children succeed not only in school, but also prepare them for college and the "real world." Three reasons why I think school uniforms should be used in all schools: firstly, they are economical, secondly, they reduce distractions and finally, they contribute to social equality. To begin with, school uniforms are budget-friendly. When schools have a uniform policy, it makes it easier for children and parents. This is convenient because a child can simply go to their closet, choose a uniform and be ready for school. It is also very profitable. Parents can outfit their children twice a year in hot and cold weather uniforms, rather than spending hundreds of dollars trying to keep up with expensive designer clothing. In addition to being economically beneficial, school uniforms also help reduce distractions in the classroom. When a child knows what is expected of them, regarding their attire, it helps reduce distractions in the classroom. Uniforms encourage modesty and also reduce the need for discipline from teachers because a student violates the dress code. When uniforms are in place, children come to class looking professional, which can promote a better learning environment. The last, and perhaps most important, reason why I think school uniforms are necessary is for social equality. School uniforms reduce the stress children feel when trying to fit in with their peers. Without them, some children risk being alienated because their economic status reflects the clothes they wear. Children tend to divide into "cliques" and uniforms could potentially help unite students. Finding creative ways to express their individuality through means other than fashion can help children form friendships based on their shared interests. In conclusion, I think school uniforms are something that all schools should really consider implementing into their policy. All these arguments show that they could be economical, help children concentrate and reduce the obstacles that children can accumulate simply because of what they wear..
