  • Essay / History of the Polaroid Corporation - 1795

MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE: As previously stated, the Polaroid Corp. was founded in 1937 by Edwin H. Land. Even today, he is considered the Steve Jobs of the 1900s. He created a private company that initially focused on eyewear and, following a stunning revelation, expanded into a new field known today as consumer electronics. He was CEO for 43 years, growing the company from a small research and marketing firm to an exceptional corporation before being forced to give up his seat in 1980 after the debacle of a product they launched called "Polavision". The company suffered a downturn after 1980 after a few months without a new CEO named and ended up paying $89 million in damaged goods. The company had to lay off thousands of employees and close numerous factories across the country. Faced with all these situations, the board finally decided to appoint a new CEO known as MacAllister Booth from 1980 to 1995. When MacAllister Booth resigned, another CEO took over from 1995 to 2001, known under the name Gary DiCamillo. A few years later, Gary DiCamillo said that the biggest mistake he and the former CEO made was falling in love with the idea of having a photograph that can be felt, touched and also cared for forever. They couldn't see the change from hard copy to digital format in time to develop a plan. There is a bit of a void as to who the CEO was between 2001 and 2009 as the company bounced between companies like Hilco Consumer Capital and Gordon Brothers Brands. Many employees were fired or replaced by employees of other companies. However, eventually, in 2009, a new CEO was appointed by PLR IP Holdings, LLC after establishing a joint venture with the parent company. The CEO...... middle of paper ...... organization where creativity, innovation and development matter most.
