  • Essay / The pros and cons of Harsh-Heart and...

Mr. and Mrs. Harsh-Heart believe in the importance of harsh discipline and impose strict rules that they expect their children to obey without question. They severely penalize any behavior, often through spanking. Mr. and Mrs. Easy-Going do not use punishment to enforce their rules and believe in natural consequences, teaching lessons and setting limits on behavior. They hold regular family meetings with their children to discuss household rules and their importance in family dynamics. Although the two forms of parenting are completely different, both methods have their own advantages and disadvantages. First of all, to discuss the pros and cons of parenting styles between the hard-hearted and the easy-going, their child-rearing styles need to be categorized. First of all. Child rearing is a combination of parenting behaviors that manifest in a wide range of situations. There are four different categories of combinations in child rearing: authoritative, authoritative, permissive and uninvolved. After studying these two different cases, it can be said that Mr. and Mrs. Harsh-Heart use an authoritarian approach to child rearing while the Easy-Goings use an authoritarian style of parenting. Authoritarian childrearing has "little acceptance and involvement, but it involves high coercive control and a low degree of autonomy." (Laura 216) Authoritarian parents experience a lot of punishment and usually resort to spanking to discipline. The parents are the bosses, there are rules, it's tyrannical, there is structure and the parents are directive. On the other hand, the authoritarian approach is just the opposite and is considered the most effective approach. Raising children with authority "involves high acceptance and involvement, and...... middle of paper ...... things have far more downsides than upsides." Children of authoritarian parents are unhappy and have low self-esteem. They get bad grades at school and become bullies. These children become dependent and have very bad relationships with their parents because they are afraid of them. Works Cited • “Authoritative Parenting.” 2014. The Iloveindia website.
