Essay / Without Consciousness Chapter Summary - 1626
The psychopath knows his reasons for acting in a certain way and simply does not think about the consequences. Even in the DSM-IV, there is no clear definition of a psychopath, but the closest diagnosis is antisocial personality disorder. Instead, Dr. Hare developed the Psychopathy Checklist for people to diagnose psychopathy. The first part of the Psychopathy Checklist examines the emotional and interpersonal traits of the disorder (Hare, 1993). Some of the emotional qualities the clinician looks for are: flippant/superficial, self-centered/grandiose, and lack of empathy. Another item on the checklist is violation of social norms and living without purpose (Hare, 1993). The psychopath is very impulsive and has a constant need for excitement (Hare, 1993). The Psychopathy Checklist contains the basic characteristics of a person with psychopathy.
