In a study conducted by Jonathan Scott and Alison Armstrong, they investigated the positive and negative social impacts of gaming. The study found that MMORPG players maintained more online friendships and had a better experience entertainment and gaming than could be found in the real world. The study confirms that gaming is “an engaging, immersive and socially rich environment” (Scott). While this may be true, it is easier to make friends online than in the real world, I think users are still distracted from real world opportunities and are slowly withdrawing from real life roles and learning social skills of basis with real-world people. With some, they are very outgoing online while in person they are very shy. For those who enjoy online gaming, they use them as a way to seek comfort in a controlled manner while others use them as a refuge from everyday problems.
