Essay / Taiwan and China: the notion of freedom
It is interesting to think about how, over time, people's attitudes and behaviors change. They would react differently to the same situation in a different timeline, even if it was the same situation. The short video “Taiwan: The Face of Free China” was made in the 1960s, almost fifty years ago, and to think of the immense power that Taiwan has become is extraordinary. It is a nation that was built on the ideas of innovators and free thinkers and now finds itself in a position in which it provides aid to developing countries. Say no to plagiarism. Taiwan has apparently joined the West's ideas and its customs and culture to create a system in which every individual has freedom of choice. In recent years, China has limited the freedom of its citizens and while we may view this as an injustice, it would be beneficial to be in its position. The freedom to choose what we want and when we want is an ideology that, in theory, seems right and humane, but that doesn't mean it's always beneficial. If we were to give a child this freedom, they could choose to eat candy at any time. Yet as adults we know this is not ideal and we would like to persuade him to opt for healthier options. Freedom is a tricky situation because, although it is a human right that we should all have the choice to choose what we want in our lives, that same freedom can cause us serious harm. China followed a similar ideology in terms of lack of political, religious freedom. and economic freedom, by protecting this choice of its citizens, it avoided causing them harm. It is interesting, as we move forward into the 21st century, with globalization and connectivity being the main reasons, to see how the ideas of freedom will influence and change China in the years to come..
