    Our world today is moving at a rapid pace and is completely technology driven, sometimes we need to remember our past. Without saying that technology and the future should be rejected, our society can consider the experiences and practices of our ancestors (Smith). Specifically, the one-room schoolhouse and how it can be applied to teaching today's students. The one-room schoolhouse is an iconic symbol of schooling as pioneers began to settle the West. The one-room schoolhouse provides a different but specific educational setting than today's classroom does not have. I'm not saying go back to the past is "better", but see if the one-room schoolhouse framework can be applied to teaching today's students. To see one-room schools as an iconic symbol, a history of the one-room school. hall schools are necessary. One-room schoolhouses were the key to American education for nearly 150 years. The schools were designed to develop the practical skills of the three Rs; reading, writing and arithmetic, as well as moral and spiritual values. The first teachers started as men in the 1800s, then moved to single women, because at that time it was believed that women raised our children and would be good teachers. In the late 1800s, into the 1900s, female teachers outnumbered male teachers (Sanders). The school day back then was very different from today.
