Essay / Arthurian Legends - 864
He who draws this sword from this stone will be crowned king, born of all Brytaygne (Mallory, The Crowning Arthur 4). Arthurian legends take place in the 12th century. In the 12th century, Britain was a very poor country and constantly at war with the surrounding regions. At that time, King Uther was in power. He loved a woman named Igraine, who was married to the Duke of Tintagil of Cornwall. King Uther disguised himself as a duke and then had a child with Igraine. This child was Arthur. This is how the legend of Arthur was born. There are three stories important to the theme: The Coronation of Arthur, by Sir Thomas Mallory, Arthur Becomes King, written by TH White, and Sir Launcelot du Lake, written by Sir Thomas Mallory. Mallory and White use a plot involving a quest to show that trusting and remaining true to oneself to accomplish something for the sake of others will lead to success, happiness, and good fortune. In Mallory's The Coronation of Arthur, King Uther, Sir Ulfius, and Merlin, go on a quest to Tintagil, with the mission of making Lady Igraine fall in love with the king. Merlin, who is a prophet, imagined a method to make Igraine believe that her husband, who was at war, had returned early. The plan worked for the most part. It was discovered that hours before Uther and his friends arrived, the real duke had been killed. Igraine was disturbed by the events of the day but did not confide in anyone. She eventually married Uther and together they had a baby boy, named Arthur. Arthur was raised outside the castle, due to a promise made between Merlin and Uther, that Merlin could have the child they are carrying and raise him. When King Uther died, Arthur was still too young to claim the throne, and he... middle of paper... death. The two knights fought well but Sir Launcelot emerged victorious. He freed all the knights captured and held captive by Sir Tarquine, including Sir Ector and Sir Lyonel. He helped others and was happy with his new victory, Sir Launcelot was a hero and saved many lives. By using a quest in the plot, Mallory and White show that trusting and remaining true to oneself to accomplish something for the sake of others will lead to success, happiness, and good fortune. They also use good versus evil in the three stories about the chivalrous knights of the Round Table and the love of the people of Camelot. Another theme that could apply to these stories is that following your heart to do what is right will pave the way to a strong future. Arthurian legends spark an interest in knights and battles. The stories of King Arthur are a testament to courage and strength.
