“BREAKING NEWS, Yet Another Driver Dies Due to Distraction Caused by Texting While Driving”. These stories are constantly in the news and seem inevitable. Car accidents are the leading cause of teen deaths in the United States, combined with inexperience and distractions, like texting while driving. No state bans cell phone use for all drivers. Driving and the technology we have today don't mix, and there are apps and phone devices to avoid this conflict. “More than 16,000 people die each year and with the advancement of technology in people's daily lives, this number will only increase.” More and more people die every day from texting while driving. It is time for the United States government to take a stronger stance and regulate more laws to reduce this number. Teenagers should be the last group of people to break this law. “Texting while driving makes accidents 23 times more likely.” As drivers become more experienced, texting while driving increases. For example, “24% of 16-year-olds reported texting and driving, compared to 58% of 18-year-olds who do not.” In general, teens text significantly more than adults while driving. In fact, “82% of drivers aged 16 to 24 admitted to having read a text message while driving”. Not only are the teens inexperienced, but they are attempting to accomplish a nearly impossible task while driving. Texting while driving is the leading cause of death among teens, surpassing the death rate from drunk driving. Studies show that if this trend continues, more than 3,000 teenagers will die next year. For example, if a driver sends a 5 second text message while traveling at 55 mph, that's the equivalent of driving an entire football field the length......in the middle of a sheet... ...for this, a simple text message is not worth dying for. Creating a law banning texting while driving may be a treatment for the symptom, but it fails to address the root cause of the problem. The root cause is that people do not stop and take the risk associated with texting while driving and do not take this issue seriously. Each state has its own respective laws regarding policy and penalties for texting while driving, not all of which are strict. enough to force people to put down their phones. Every state should have the exact same laws prohibiting texting. Because of these facts, it is imperative that the United States government take strong action against the growing war on texting and driving. Make app downloads mandatory and ensure our country understands the horrific danger that can arise simply by typing "hey, what's up ?”
