Essay / Domestic Violence in Social Work - 1181
As social workers work with oppressed perspectives and politics, it is difficult to engage with clients, particularly those from vulnerable groups. Additionally, working with such deeply rooted perceptions in culture and society makes it difficult to interact with women who have been disempowered, due to the control and power exerted over them by their partners. Being aware of this is useful for future practice as a social worker, as it will allow us to establish more effective and supportive relationships with women experiencing domestic violence. Additionally, it will help to challenge the “crazy” stereotypes attached to victims of domestic violence and recognize that any symptoms they experience are the result of the abuse. Additionally, be aware of language usage and not blame the victim, as often financial constraints force the victim to stay with or return to the abuser. Our society has worked to distance the victim from the offender, but has provided very little financial assistance to enable them to remain independent. Even more so, looking at this issue at a macro level could help address this issue for individuals at a micro level, by targeting interventions at the community level and seeking to implement policies that will create a society less tolerant of domestic violence.
