  • Essay / Why Books Should Be Banned - 1037

Confucius says: “No matter how busy you think you are, you must find time to read, or give in to the ignorance you have chosen” ( Yarbrough, 2012). The First Amendment protects our free speech rights, but people don't respect or challenge it. Banning books violates academic freedom and diversity of thought, but some think it's wrong for children to learn about sexuality and slavery. Although book bans discourage creativity and critical thinking, libraries have the right to remove a book if it is included on the banned books list. So think about how you feel about books and what they mean to you. I love books and I hate when one day we take one off a shelf, even if people think they are “inappropriate”. So, again, think about it from a reader's perspective: how banning books IS against our First Amendment, how it restricts learning, and how it discourages the creativity and critical thinking of students. children.
