  • Essay / Glamor Is Myth - 1547

Noor's exhibition “Glamour Is Myth” began as a simple message intended to provoke reflection on the act of smoking. Glamor Is Myth was never really intended as an anti-smoking vehicle despite the anti-smoking moniker. Instead, Glamor Is Myth was truly intended as a provocative voice, intended only to provoke enough thought for an individual to make an informed choice whether or not to smoke. When Noor first set out to present this exhibition in 1989, we could not have imagined that the anti-smoking movement would go this far. Nor could we have known that it would have been propelled by seemingly fascist machinations that were essentially intended to brainwash a country into a philosophy. Yes, the philosophies behind the anti-smoking movement are fundamentally noble, but once that core has been tampered with and equipped with a propaganda steamroller intent on subjugating everyone, you end up with an animal infinitely more dangerous to society than tobacco. could ever become. This animal is the culture of “groupthink”, which is an indispensable principle of fascism. Apparently, when the word "fascist" is used, the listener conjures up images of Doc Martens, brown shirts, and mass graves. The foundations of fascist thought are infinitely more subtle in its functioning and in its core. Fascism primarily aims to cultivate uniformity among the masses and is fundamentally dictatorial. In fact, Noor would hazard to say that the imagery of the brown shirt is a friend of subjugation in that it serves as a functional distraction so that fascist propaganda can advance without hindrance or resistance from the masses who largely remain ignorant. .. middle of paper ...... I did it. This same person would have vehemently denied that there was anything vaguely fascist about the anti-smoking movement or the way it was carried out. This is an archetypal behavior of individuals who do not wish to confront or be confronted with the possibility that they have not understood how the cultural mass of which we are all a part has been led down a path and sold a commodity which is not necessarily good. The inherent insidiousness of this situation is found in the self-deception that is a by-product of the zealous actions of those who would be altruistic and who lack a basic understanding of the domino effect which, once triggered, will ultimately backtrack and demand the sacrifice of the rights that these very fanatics assume are indisputably theirs. In the final analysis, one has to wonder if perhaps we just had smoke blown in our collective faces..
