The World Wide WebFor anyone born in the 90s or later, the World Wide Web (WWW or Web) has always been a part of their life. They could not imagine a world without it; although the WWW came into existence only a year before the start of the 90s. People had been living without using the WWW since before 1989, and everyone born after 1989 grew up using the WWW. The WWW has changed the way society functions in many ways. Not so long ago, letters were a means of communication that could take up to a week to respond to, but with the help of WWW, anyone can send an email with a response within a few hours only. This is just one of the many ways the WWW affected the United States. In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee invented the WWW, about 20 years after the first connection was established on what we now call the Internet. In 1989, Berners-Lee was a software engineer at CERN, the largest particle physics laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland (WWW 1 Foundation). Berners-Lee had proposed a set of technologies that could make the Internet accessible and useful to many people. However, at first Berners-Lee's proposal was not accepted, but he did not give up without a fight. He persevered, and by October 1990, he had introduced the three essential technologies that still form the foundation of today's Web: 1. HTML: Hypertext Markup Language. This is the publishing format for the Web. It has the ability to format documents and create links to other documents and resources. 2. URI: Uniform resource identifier. This is a specific address for each Web resource. 3. HTTP: Hypertext Transfer Protocol. It allows the retrieval of linked resources on the Web (1).
