Essay / Othello Review - 1383
“Othello” itself, as a play, is very dramatic and appeals to audiences today as much as it did then, because many people can relate identify with the themes discussed there and also because the scenario is so fascinating. The play “Othello” would have been very significant in the Shakespearean era because the union of a black Muslim and a white Christian would have been rare and frowned upon. At the time, black people were seen as savages and monsters and being Muslim would have made the situation worse. This contrast between two completely opposite people was shocking and therefore would have attracted many people, because it was unusual. Also in the end, Othello mercilessly kills her, which to people would have reflected an idea they had about Othello's "gender." At the beginning of Act 5, Scene 2, Othello enters the scene and arrives with the intention of killing Desdemona. On stage there is only one torch lit and so most of the stage would be in darkness. In Trevor Nunn's production of "Othello," the only things visible to the audience would be the beautiful Desdemona sleeping in her white wedding sheets and the black Othello. , the man who plays Othello (Willard White) wears black robes in this scene. This contrast of black and white is clearly visible to the audience. Firstly, the darkness on stage will give the audience a sense of foreboding. This would increase the tension. Shakespeare intentionally used this contrast of black and white for dramatic impact. The black color of Othello and his clothes will be perceived as a representation of evil. The color black symbolizes evil and fear of color is used even in literature, for example "black mail" or "black hole", while white is considered good with expressions such as "whitewashing" or “whiter than white”. '. Othe...... middle of paper ......k on your sins' and Desdemona replies 'These are the loves that I bear for you.' This shows the audience Desdemona’s love. This will also cause the audience to hate Othello because they believe in the evil Iago who is plotting against him. In my opinion, in this scene, Shakespeare used dramatic impact. Some critics of Shakespeare's time said that "the tragic part (of Othello) is nothing other than a bloody farce, without salt or flavor. » - Thomas Rhymer, but I disagree with this and think that act 5 scene 2 is like an emotional movie. a roller coaster ride with the deaths and with all the details tied up nicely and I believe the audience would have enjoyed Othello and the last sequence would help them realize the importance of trust and jealousy. I conclude that this would make the audience feel like they understand certain things like trust better and it would also have a huge dramatic impact as it would affect an audience..
